A Crazy Stressful Weekend

Over the last week, I had been a little concerned about Sam. She seemed to be spitting up a whole lot more and was also losing a little weight. I called Melanie, to ask her what she thought. She recommended that I go ahead and call the Dr. I waited around until Friday evening when she started running a fever again. Of course it was about 5 min to 5 when we called, so they sent us to a clinic called Fast ER Care. We got there, and lets just say it was anything but fast:). I had given her tylenol per her Dr.'s order, and by the time we got up to Fast ER, it had come down to 99.4. If you remember she had been running the fever about a month ago. We chalked it up to the tooth thing before, but this time they decided to do a couple of cultures to rule out any blood infection or bladder infection. This would be the part where mommy lost it:) She didn't seem to mind the catheter - which they were unsuccessful at getting any urine because she had just wet her diaper. I cried a little with that, but really lost it when they went for the blood. They tried to find a vein in her arm. Once they thought they found it, they stuck the needle in and then went fishing to actually get it. She was screaming, they were holding her down, I was crying, but fortunately, Todd had it together. The initial blood work showed no sign of any significant infection. One of her counts was slightly elevated, so they think she may have a minor viral infection, but nothing serious. She seems healthy overall. We will have to wait until Monday to get the results of the blood culture. Her Dr. wanted to see her this morning, so we made a trip up to his office. of course this morning she had no fever. He went over all the paperwork from last night and gave her the once over again. Everything checked out fine - no ear, nose or throat issues. Again he felt around in her mouth and this time said that her gums were swollen and he can really feel the tooth there. It may still take another month or so for it to pop through, but he really thinks this is what is causing the fever. It has been 101.1. he considers anything 101 or less to be in the teething category. It is the .1 that bothers him. They were going to try to get a urine sample today for a urine culture, but he decided not to traumatize her anymore this weekend. If the fever is not gone in a couple of days or if it should go up to 102 or higher, we will do the urine culture then.
While in his office she had one of her major spit ups and he said that it is definitely reflux. He said we could try her on Zantac or the other one (can't remember the name) or we could try giving her a little rice cereal once every few days. I am not a big medication person, so we decided to give the cereal a try for a week or so and see how that goes. We gave it a go today, and she did a pretty good job. I think it might have been easier to just give it to her in a bottle, but went with the spoon this time around. i don't think i realized how liquid it would be. She did alright, but i think she enjoyed chewing on the spoon more that the cereal:) She wants to chew on everything, I guess because of the tooth, but she is not quite able to keep them in her mouth yet. She can hold them, but that is about it. Not being able to keep them in her mouth makes her mad. She is happy if you can help her keep it in her mouth. She really likes the teether she has that vibrates. It is a little heavey and she has trouble with that one.
So that has been our weekend. So stressful for mommy:) oh and Sam too. Although you'd never know it by her.
We took a little video of her first cereal, so enjoy!!

Poor baby and poor Mommy. I bet that was hard. The whole catheter and then the blood draw thing. And to think, they want to make it legal for police officers to draw blood when there is a suspicion of driving under the influence. Heck, even the people in the medical field can't draw blood! Don't even get me started on that!!

Anyway....I hope little Sam is doing better and her temp stays down and they figure out where the .1 is coming from. Let me know how that all goes.

Also, just a heads up if you didn't already know, if you try the rice cereal in the bottle, you may have a hard time getting it to come through which will frustrate Sam. We were told to try this with ours also and couldn't get it to come through the nipple without them sucking so hard it exhausted them to the point they didn't want to eat anymore. And we just did the bare minimum the pedi said to try so it wouldn't be too thick. You may have to try those different nipples for a thicker consistency (can't remember what they are called). We gave up on putting the cerial in the bottle and just stuck with the medicine. We do zantac for one and prevacid for the other (prevacid is probably the one you were trying to think of). Prevacid is more expensive but ours don't have reflux too bad and have found that zantac works just fine. I think prevacid is more for babies with more serious reflux.
